The inaugral St Tom’s Digital Photography competition came to an end last Saturday with an exhibition held at the church.   Entrants and guests enjoyed candid appraisals of the photographs from judge Mr Ian Cameron Black, whilst the images were shown on large screens, all accompanied by music and refreshments.

Mr Ian Black, Vice President of Southgate Photographic Society, and Rev Christopher Hobbs, Vicar of St Thomas’s, Oakwood spent the afternoon judging the images on the theme of ‘I Love Oakwood’.

The 5-10’s category was won by Katie (aged 9) for photography of a daffodil. Mr Black commented on the well exposed image and good composition, with one daffodil in the centre of the frame.  Other entrants included shots of the entrant's brothers sat in the ‘tree seat’ in Oakwood Park and a snowy Oakwood.

The 11-18’s category proved a great challenge for the panel. Not only we’re there more entries but a wider interpretation of the theme and more technically competent images.   One entrant took images along his walk to the Tube station, another Oakwood Park where he plays, but the winning shot was from Matthew (aged 14), an Air Cadet with Highlands & Southgate Squadron, who took a shot using a camera phone of local man and ex Spitfire pilot Jack Thompson. The judge awarded the prize for good interpretation of the theme.

The Adult category provided a wide range of images, from enthusiast images, to candid images of a yellow VW bug and rusting cars on driveways.  The prize went to Mike Leahy for a shot of his daughter playing in Oakwood Park. Mr Black commented on the colouring and exposure of the image, and to many people the ability to play in the park really says ‘I Love Oakwood’.

We hope you enjoyed the competition and will take some time to view the galleries. Ideas for future themes would be welcome.
