Going...going...gone!
Many have been asking what is happening, and commenting on how they miss the steeple. The stump has now been removed, and the long task begins of deciding what to do in its place.
We are enormously grateful for the donations which have already come in towards the successor - coins collected in bottles, notes in envelopes - it is clear that there are people out there who want to support us in this way.
But the big question is what to do. Replacing the copper-clad wooden structure with an identical one would probably result in just the same problem 50 years down the line, and this would be hard to justify financially. In the USA they seem to build them out of fibre-glass, though not usually as tall as ours. More humourous suggestions have included using holograms or inflatables! Of course the ultimate decision will be subject to the strict building controls of the Church of England. The church council will in due course be looking in to all the options, and, like the members of the community, wanting to retain the church building as a local landmark.
