The
Job
The Assistant Minister post will most likely be a general
training for a new minister or a role for a “second curacy”, with two
particular responsibilities: evangelism and training, in accordance with our
aim of making Jesus known in Oakwood. It is our hope to make appropriate
changes to our pattern of services and activities as the post develops.
The job would be open to someone ordained in another
Anglican church, or someone open to ordination outside the Church of England.
This is a full time job with the intention that the minister
would stay for at least three years. Looking at the scope of opportunities we
anticipate the job needing a minimum of forty hours per week. The salary will be subject to negotiation,
but commensurate with a curate’s stipend in the Diocese of London. A rent free

Hours will be flexible including evening and weekend
work. One whole day off each week is
given. Annual leave is five weeks a
year, to be taken at times agreed with other members of the staff team and the
Vicar. Team members are encouraged to make full use of days off and annual
leave, and will be allowed at least one training conference per year, paid by
the church.
The post holder will be a committed Christian in full
sympathy with the aims and ideals of the evangelical ministry of St Thomas’s
Church. The Assistant Minister is likely to have undertaken a period of
theological study and should have a good biblical understanding. The job is a varied one, requiring
flexibility and initiative. An ability
to relate across a wide age range is important, as is the ability to teach the
Bible creatively. The candidate should
be able to work well as part of a team and have experience of working with
volunteers.
The Assistant Minister should act as a support and backup to
the Vicar in the life and work of the church, and should contribute to the
ideas and vision of the church. It is hoped the Assistant Minister could take
significant responsibility when the Vicar takes study leave in 2011. The
Assistant Minister is especially encouraged to develop new outreach or
community ventures in the life of the church, and to be leading our door to
door work.
