Recommended family resources

We thought it would be helpful to put together a little list of family resources to go with the upcoming parenting seminar.

Parenting Books

With over 75,000 books published on parenting over the last 10 years, it can be pretty daunting to know where to start. Below are some of the most highly recommended resources coming from a distinctly gospel-focussed perspective.

Everyday Talk: Talking freely and naturally about God with your children, John A Younts. The book encourages us to have gospel intentionality in all we do and say with our kids rather than perhaps just at certain points in the day/week. An excellent resource.

Give them Grace: Dazzling your kids with the love of Jesus, Elyse Fitzpatrick. Deeply challenges not to parent by law, but by grace.

Duties of Parents, JC Ryle. This timeless Bible teaching from Ryle (written over 100 years ago) has been described as one of the best resources for parents, outside of the Bible.

Parenting: The 14 Gospel principles that can radically change your family, Paul David Tripp. Excellent on how the gospel shapes our parenting.

Age of Opportunity: A biblical guide to parenting teens, Paul David Tripp. Excellent on motivations for parenting teens.

Children’s Bibles & ‘Bible Time’ resources

A good children’s Bible will focus on the gospel, not just retelling events.

The Big Picture Story Bible, David Helm. A brilliant Bible overview for 2-7s.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every story whispers his name, Sally Lloyd-Jones. Focusses on Jesus as the fulfilment on every story. Probably the best Bible for younger children (2-7 years olds).

XtB: Explore the Bible, The Good Book Company. Daily Bible reading notes for 7-11 year olds.

Engage, The Good Book Company. Bible study notes designed for 14-18 year olds.

Music

Learning songs is a great way for children to remember Bible truth - songs learnt well as a child can stick until old age.

Colin Buchanan (www.colinbuchanan.com.au). Fun and quirky songs for all the family.

Seeds Family Worship. Awesome Christ-centred resources for the family. Look out especially for Seeds of Purpose (Vol. 4).

Sovereign Grace Music, available in the UK through EMU music. Music for juniors who are getting beyond quirky children’s songs. Look out especially for ‘Awesome God’ and ‘To be like Jesus’
